During the Job and Internship Fair
When you walk into the fair, you will see a Loeb Center for Career Exploration and Planning check-in table. At the check-in table, you will scan the check-in QR code, which will create your printed name tag.
Each employer will also have a QR code at their table to track who visited them. If you would like the recruiter to have your contact information or want to receive their post-fair updates, make sure to scan their QR code.
Practice your active listening skills. Make eye contact. Having researched the organizations that are attending, you should have a list of questions prepared. When chatting or speaking, try to avoid slang or references unfamiliar to those outside of Amherst. For example: “I am a Law, Jurisprudence, and Social Thought major” not “I am a LJST major”.
The Loeb Center’s How-to Guide for Informational Interviews will walk you through some helpful, foundational questions you might ask, or you can read this article about questions to ask recruiters.
We recommend paper and pencil/pen for taking notes to demonstrate that you are focused on what is happening in the moment. Something you could write down are words or phrases to look up or questions to follow up with in your thank-you notes. Write down something that will help you remember the conversation.
Each employer will have a QR code at their table. If you would like the recruiter to have your contact information or you would like to receive their post-fair updates, make sure to scan their QR code.
