Job description

Distribution Engineer – Northern Division (Co-Op or Internship Fall 2026)

Summary of Position Duties:

Power Delivery – Distribution Engineers serve as the face of the company, working with customers to provide electrical service as well as designing, estimating, and constructing electrical distribution systems. Opportunities include both field and office work.

Requirements:

• Minimum GPA of 2.8 (3.0 for internship positions)

• Commitment of 3 alternating semesters (Co-op only)

• Must have current authorization to work in the U.S.

• Degree desired varies with position but include:

• Engineering: EE, ME, IE

Successful candidate could be placed in any of the following locations: Biloxi, Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, Pascagoula, Hattiesburg, Laurel, or Meridian.

This position is responsible for the design and management of area construction activities for capital and O&M projects, to include developing and implementing distribution plans, focus on customer service and satisfaction through reliability, and compliance with customer and distribution system requirements. The area consists of residential, commercial, and industrial customers.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

– Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems in the Distribution design area.

– Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.

– Prepares thorough and accurate cost estimates, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.

– Conducts engineering and related studies.

– Strives to continually improve job-related, engineering, technical and professional knowledge, skills and performance.

– Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

– Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.

– Maintains accurate records and files.

– Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

– Process switching requests submitted to Distribution Control Center.

– Must be available after hours as required to provide leadership and assist in emergency restoration.

Qualifications: Basic Qualifications

– Bachelor of Science in the following Engineering disciplines from an ABET accredited program: Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Industrial or Chemical.

– Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

– Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

Desired Qualifications

– Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering

– Received a passing grade on the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.

– Demonstrated good understanding of electric utility and facility design standards, specifications and requirements for electrical projects, and the ability to produce construction documents.

– Demonstrated understanding of construction management skills and practices.

– Demonstrated effective negotiating skills.

– Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

– Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

– Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.

– Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings, and provide direction to others.

– Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

– Understanding of basic principles of project management

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

– Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

– Strong technical writing skills preferred.

– Strong project management and organizational skills

– Ability to maintain attention to details in written and spoken communication is required.

– Ability to utilize excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain strong, positive relationships with employees and customers.

– Ability to work in a team environment

– Ability to prioritize work activities and manage time effectively

Mississippi Power Division employees participating in the engineering on-call rotation shall live within a reasonable distance from their assigned headquarters; reasonable distance to be determined and approved by PDDO, Distribution leadership team.
