Kinetic Sculpture Artist – Earthsong Garden, Project Chimps

Project Chimps is seeking a Kinetic Sculpture Artist Intern to help bring the Earthsong Garden to life through motion‑driven, nature‑inspired musical installations. This role blends creativity, environmental design, and hands‑on fabrication to create interactive artworks that harmonize with the sanctuary’s natural landscape and the rhythms of the chimpanzee residents.

Position Overview

The intern will design and build kinetic musical sculptures that respond to wind, touch, or natural movement within the Earthsong Garden. These pieces should evoke a sense of play, curiosity, and connection to the environment, contributing to a multisensory experience for visitors and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Development — Create concept sketches, models, or prototypes for kinetic musical sculptures inspired by nature, sound, and motion.
  • Fabrication & Assembly — Build durable outdoor‑ready pieces using safe, weather‑resistant materials.
  • Sound Integration — Incorporate chimes, resonant materials, or mechanical elements that produce gentle, organic tones.
  • Site Collaboration — Work with Project Chimps staff to select installation sites that enhance both aesthetics and environmental harmony.
  • Documentation — Record the creative process through photos, notes, and diagrams for future educational use.

Ideal Candidate

  • Passion for kinetic art, sound sculpture, or environmental art
  • Basic experience with metalwork, woodworking, or mixed‑media construction
  • Interest in conservation, sanctuary environments, or biophilic design
  • Ability to work independently and problem‑solve creatively
  • Portfolio demonstrating artistic curiosity and craftsmanship

Internship Details

  • Location: Project Chimps Sanctuary, North Georgia
  • Duration: Flexible (8–12 weeks preferred)
  • Commitment: Part‑time (remote) or full‑time (onsite) options
  • Compensation: Unpaid internship with housing support available and a weekly stipend for full-time applicants
  • Materials: All materials will be supplied within an agreed upon budget once initial concepts are approved
  • Additional Perks: Access to sanctuary grounds, mentorship from staff, and the opportunity to create a lasting artistic contribution to a nationally recognized chimpanzee sanctuary.
