Job description
The First Year Experience (FYE) Program aims to support students by providing comprehensive onboarding and retention services, connecting them to campus programs and services and Promise benefits, and engaging them in campus events and activities throughout their first two years at Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC). Students receive supportive services and activities to help them transition from high school to college and persist to their second year in college and beyond.
The Promise Coaches (unclassified paid interns) are valuable team members of the program. Their paraprofessional duties are part of the onboarding and retention components of the program, which help students acclimate to the academic and social expectations and culture of college life.
Requirements/Qualifications
To apply for this position, you must be enrolled full-time in an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in psychology, sociology, education, or a related field during the fall and spring semesters. You should have a good understanding of the diverse and unique needs of an academically underprepared student population and possess the ability to relate to them in a sensitive and respectful manner. You should be mature, friendly, personable, energetic, and flexible in your approach to work.
Your communication skills should be strong, both in writing and speaking. You should possess excellent listening, presentation, leadership, organizational, and mentoring skills. Additionally, you should be proficient in Microsoft Office programs and could work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff.
This is a part-time position, and you will be expected to work 20 – 25 hours per week throughout the academic year. And you must be able to work on campus and during the summer months, June – August.
Examples of Duties:
1. Coach students through high-impact and direct follow-up services. This will help students complete their onboarding and retention requirements.
2. Respond to routine inquiries regarding matriculation, Promise program requirements, college services, and academic support programs.
3. Assist with program workshops, summer transition initiatives, and both on- and off-campus events to enhance student engagement and success.
4. Assist the FYE Coordinator and District LACP lead on new student onboarding initiatives, persistence strategies, and student success workshops.
