Position: Fall Paid Tour Guide Intern
Description: Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (FISH) is an environmental education nonprofit that supports salmon recovery. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about fish and education. In this role you will view the adult salmon return up close while teaching the public about salmon conservation, hatchery fish operations, and watershed stewardship.
Dates: September – November
Times: Weekdays, 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM, weekends 10 AM – 2 PM and 2 PM – 6 PM
Hours: 4 – 20 hours / week, 100+ hours
Shifts are 4 hours. Interns must commit to a minimum of 100 hours, which equates to 1 – 2 shifts per week. Interns may complete more hours if preferred and receive an increase in stipend at the $20 per hour rate. We have some timing flexibility and can negotiate with students for mornings versus afternoons and specific days. The greatest need is for support on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and weekends.
Stipend: $2,000+ ($20 / hour for 100 hours, stipend increases at $20 per hour)
Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate well with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, especially youth.
- Ability to learn and teach science information.
- Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment.
- Be professional, responsible, and great with time management.
- Be comfortable working with technology and processing transactions.
- Have reliable transportation to the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (125 W Sunset Way, Issaquah, WA, 98027).
- Be age 18 or older by the time of the internship start date.
Responsibilities:
- Lead hatchery tours for school and public groups.
- Support operations for education and outreach programs and the FISHop.
- Complete a project that benefits the organization, such as design and lead a special topic tour / program, build / update an education prop, or improve an operations process. This project will be identified and agreed upon by the FISH Volunteer Coordinator and Volunteer Intern during the first few weeks of the internship.
