SUMMARY
The Teacher/Lead Job Supervisor will teach, supervise and work alongside adults with special needs (“Citizens”) as they create unique, marketable items to help sustain the vocational community that they enjoy. The Teacher/Lead Job Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of assistant job supervisors and volunteers on duty each day. This individual will create a safe, caring, and joyful environment, and will set an excellent example of work ethic to staff, volunteers and Citizens. The individual who fulfills this role will have an opportunity to transition to the Director’s role as the community grows.
I. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provide for daily needs, adaptations, and general wellness of Citizens. This includes creating a positive, entrepreneurial environment and adapting the work and social environment to set the Citizens up for success.
- Monitor the general well-being of Citizens during the workday and communicating their needs for support and needs of the Citizens with the Director.
- Submit payroll hours as directed by Director. Participate in weekly staff meetings as well as one-on-one meeting with the Director, providing and accepting feedback to help improve the program.
- Run a daily workroom which includes setting it up in the morning and breaking it down at the end of the day. This may include acquiring a food handler’s license if working with food, and/or prepping enterprises behind the scenes.
- Work with and help train volunteers on enterprises and adapting the environment for our Citizens. This also includes overseeing volunteers assigned to their daily team.
- Facilitate Citizen breaks and lunch and provide personal care when needed.
- Maintain and clean facility and grounds as needed
- Help with new product design and implementation. Thoughtfully schedule and plan activities prior to each week.
- Represent the vocational community as requested at special events such as venues, community outreach, transition fairs and fundraisers.
- Accept responsibility for any additional authority area as directed by the Director.
II. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Teacher/Lead Job Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision of the Citizens in their care each day. This individual will also be responsible for the supervision of assistant Job Supervisors and volunteers on duty each day. The candidate will carry out all responsibilities in accordance with BIG-Lowcountry’s policies and procedures and in adherence to our Core Values.
III. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE – Prefer undergraduate degree with at least 1 year experience (paid or volunteer) working with adults with special needs.
B. SKILLS AND ABILITIES – Candidates should possess personal characteristics such as patience, tolerance, and a willingness to adapt expectations and learn more about specific disabilities. Candidates must have a strong sense of serving and caring for the needs of adults with functional disabilities in their care
C. LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, interpret, and communicate documents such as safety procedures, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to write comprehensive reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively and motivate employees at all levels in the Community. Experience with sign language a strong plus.
D. Reasoning Ability – Candidates should have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of individual behavioral issues while maintaining control of a group setting.
E. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations – First consideration given to those with CPR and first aid. Incumbents must possess a minimum of a valid driver’s license from the State of South Carolina.
IV. PHYSICAL DEMANDS – The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, an employee is frequently required to communicate by listening or writing. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; stoop; kneel; bend; crouch; crawl; and climb stairs. The employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or transfer a Citizen to and from a wheelchair.
V. WORK ENVIRONMENT – This position requires a flexible individual, someone able to multi-task and adjust to the many variables found between assignments. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing the duties of this job, the candidate may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to chemicals, paints, extreme cold and extreme heat.
VI. HOURS AND SALARY – The Teacher/Lead Job Supervisor will work approximately 30 hours/week, including the following times: 12:30 – 5:30pm, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Additional hours are used to prepare for the upcoming week, research new enterprise possibilities, and complete any remaining tasks necessary to ensure successful programming. The individual who fulfills this role will have an opportunity to transition to the Director’s role as the community grows. Our community is closed 4.5 weeks each year.
