October is Almost Here – Let’s Fall into Finance!

Fall into Finance Is Back!

We are excited to announce another iteration of Fall into Finance! Throughout October, we will welcome Amherst alums back to campus to introduce students to a variety of career paths across finance!

Each session will feature alums sharing their career journeys, providing insight into their industries and day-to-day work, and answering your questions. We will dedicate plenty of time to Q&A, so come curious! Select guests will also host office hours, giving students an opportunity for smaller, one-on-one conversations.

Opportunity of the Week: SCOR Reinsurance Company

Sector: Insurance

Thanks to Victoria Hensley ’16, I’m happy to share that SCOR Reinsurance Company is looking for interns. SCOR is looking for students who are curious, excited to learn, and interested in understanding an important but often overlooked part of finance.

Insurance may not immediately sound as exciting as private equity or investment banking, but it is one of the most important under-the-radar areas of finance. Think about it this way: private equity firms need money to make investments, and insurance companies are one of the places they get that money from. Working in insurance can therefore teach you a lot about investing, risk, and how money moves throughout the financial system.

SCOR offers opportunities for students who want to leverage their humanities and other qualitative backgrounds in financial services. While full-time opportunities at SCOR can be limited, the pay is competitive for students who do receive full-time offers. SCOR has also helped Amherst students who intern with the firm connect with other insurance companies that are hiring if they want to continue building a career in the industry.

Check Handshake for SCOR’s current internship postings. If you want to learn more about insurance, discuss whether an opportunity fits your interests, or connect with Victoria, please book an appointment with me.

Finance on Campus

Below are a few featured finance events and employers to watch over the next few weeks. These are organizations we are actively engaging with and that are eager to connect with Amherst students.

This is only a snapshot of what is available. Be sure to regularly check the Events page for upcoming employer programs and the Finance Collections Page, which currently includes more than 4,000 summer internship and full-time opportunities across finance.

Seniors should pay particular attention to and sign up for Fidelity’s Emerging Leaders Program Office Hours. It is a unique opportunity to learn about a rotational program at a Fortune 500 financial services firm designed for recent graduates. If you are a senior still exploring full-time employment opportunities or figuring out where you might fit within financial services, this is an opportunity you should at least take the time to learn more about.

For students interested in investment banking, keep Deutsche Bank top of mind. Andrew Calloway ’97 is supporting the firm’s recruiting efforts, and Deutsche Bank will be on campus in early October. Harris Williams will also host an upcoming session for students interested in its Summer Analyst program.

Beyond traditional banking, Trillium Trading and Summer Atlantic Capital provide opportunities to explore careers in trading and investing.

  2. Deutsche Bank Investment Banking & Capital Markets Office Hours | Friday, October 2 | Open to first-years and sophomores

Networking

Remember that the goal of networking is to learn—not simply ask for a referral. Focus on building a few meaningful connections, asking thoughtful questions, and developing a genuine understanding of the firm, its people, and its work.

When reaching out to Amherst alums, be intentional. Start with one alumnus at a firm, follow up once after about five business days if needed, and prioritize quality conversations over outreach volume.

Looking for firms to explore? Use the Amherst Alumni Directory to identify alums at organizations you’re interested in. Here is also a list of alums who have volunteered to connect with students. Please focus on one connection at a time and be thoughtful with their time.

Feeling Stuck or Need Additional Support? Meet with Me!
