If your internship or job search feels harder right now, you’re not imagining it.
The current hiring landscape is more competitive than it has been in recent years. Opportunities are still out there, but they’re fewer, more selective, and increasingly focused on skills, not just majors.
That shift has left many students asking:
“What am I supposed to be doing differently?”
At the Loeb Center for Career Exploration and Planning, we’ve been thinking deeply about that question and more importantly, how to equip you with clear, practical answers.
Introducing: “The Job Search Reimagined” (Video Series)
We’ve launched a short-form video series on our YouTube channel designed specifically for this moment.
Each video is under a minute—but focused on what actually matters right now:
- Why the job market feels more competitive
- What employers are really looking for
- How to clearly communicate your skills and experience
- Where opportunities actually come from (beyond job postings)
- And how to stand out—even without extensive experience
Beyond Applications: A Smarter Way to Search
One of the biggest shifts we emphasize in this series is moving beyond a traditional “apply and wait” approach.
In today’s market, strong candidates are:
- Building relationships through informational conversations
- Exploring the hidden job market
- And using strategies like prospecting—reaching out directly to organizations or teams of interest, even when roles aren’t posted
Prospecting isn’t about asking for a job.
It’s about demonstrating curiosity, initiative, and value—before an opportunity formally exists.
For many students, this is unfamiliar. But it’s increasingly how opportunities are found and created.

A Different Approach to the Job Search
If there’s one takeaway we hope you carry forward, it’s this:
The job search today isn’t just about applying.
It’s about how you tell your story, who you connect with, and how you demonstrate your value.
That includes being willing to take initiative to reach out, start conversations, and explore opportunities that may not yet be visible.
