Effectively preparing for your first meeting at the Loeb Center can lead to a more productive, clear, and invigorating session. Here are some simple tips to help you get ready before your appointment:
Be Willing to Share
We would love to learn about yourself, your background, your interests, and even your dream job. Every Amherst student has such an incredible story and offering us a glimpse into your journey can provide you and your advisor with some purposeful guidance. I love connecting FLI students with different resources, organizations, and alumni, so any information whether it’s about your deepest worries or your exciting future goals can be very helpful.
Keep an Open Mind
Amherst students know the benefits of an open curriculum when it comes to registering for classes. The same can be said for career pathways. Now is the time to explore different ideas, fields, and industries that you may have never considered in the past. As an undergrad, I never thought of becoming a Career Advisor, it wasn’t even on my radar. Until I started working more closely with middle and high school students and really reflecting upon these experiences that I became more willing to consider a role in higher ed. And now I’m in a position and industry that I truly love!
Career Exploration is a Journey, Not a Sprint
As great as the Loeb Center can be, you won’t have your life and career all figured out after one appointment. After all, we’re not miracle workers 😅. Your interests, values, and strengths are likely to develop and change throughout your time at Amherst.
We encourage students to keep scheduling appointments with us as we’d love to continue to listen, share, and provide relevant resources to you. In addition, students can also meet with one of our Peer Career Advisors to have your resume and cover letter reviewed. Still looking for more? Feel free to take a brief personal strengths assessment to learn more about skills and values.
