Connect with Arts & Communication Program Director, Carla Costa

I’m excited for another semester of connecting with students who are interested in exploring and pursuing careers in arts and communication.

I really relate to students with these interests because they’re my interests too. I studied journalism at UMass Amherst as an undergrad and spent the following decade working as a freelance arts and culture writer. I also had the unique experiences of publishing a nationally-distributed quarterly magazine with friends in the San Francisco Bay Area, and developing short stories with a community of writers here in Hadley, MA . At the same time, I was unexpectedly building a concurrent career as an arts administrator through jobs in education administration and extensive work with volunteer-run artist collectives, which I formalized through a masters in arts administration at the Columbia University graduate school of education.  The most important thing I learned along the way: it’s possible to balance your interests and passions with smart and strategic career decisions.

As a first generation college student, and the child of immigrants who worked blue collar jobs, it wasn’t easy for me to trust that that balance was really possible. That’s why,  it means so much to me that I get to lead our Arts and Humanities in Action program, which empowers first-year students interested in those areas of study with a clear understanding of how an arts and humanities education translates to valuable workplace skills and prepares students for the challenges of tomorrow. It’s also why, as a career coach, I focus on practical ways to help students realize their visions for the future. I strive to spark excitement and curiosity about career (even when it feels intimidating or scary), to inspire career planning strategies built on your unique attributes, and to support you in setting meaningful professional and personal goals that are based on what’s most important to you

I want to hear from you! Book a time in Handshake for us to meet and discuss your goals and interests.

I also have a full roster of events designed to empower you with everything you need to be a competitive applicant in your interest areas. Watch Handshake and this page for upcoming event registrations.
